York Railway Station - Highlights
York Railway Station is a primary line railway station established in the city of York, England. It is situated on the East Coast Main Line 303 km north of London King's Cross Station towards Edinburgh Waverly Station. Primitively, it was part of the North Eastern Railway. York is the most significant railway junction station situated on the British railway network about midway between Edinburgh to London Kings Cross. The junction was previously a most important site for rolling stock manufacture, maintenance and repair.
The first York Railway Station was a provisional wooden building on Queen Street outside the walls of the city. In 1877, the station had 13 platforms and was the leading railway station in the world. In 1909, new platforms were added and in 1938 the existing footbridge was constructed and the station re-signaled. All the platforms except 9, 10 and 11 are under the large, rounded, glass and iron roof. They are accessible via a long pedestrian bridge or through lifts and either of two pedestrian tunnels.
